Milkshake Sugar Day & Diabetes~Rachel Holbert-Jones Blackheart (RavenBlackHeartLLC), Sunset SC

Update: This post was moved from my wordpress blog and was originally posted on January 5, 2023. This original post was about me but since that date, my husband has had to go on insulin but can't seem to stay off the sugar. His sugar has been high for quite some time but the metformin hasn't been effective at lowering his sugar and he has a hard time controlling his diet. It has improved but not enough. The doctor finally said his pancreas is just no longer working. From time to time I have issues with my sugar but usually only when I'm under a lot of stress. My a1c was 5.1 and has gone down from two years ago when it was 5.3. My husband's a1c just a couple of weeks ago was 13 so extremely high and the reason he's on insulin. If I'm around him, I like to eat sweets too but am trying to stay away from them and drink more water. I noticed I've gained a little weight and I'd lost weight so I'm not happy about gaining especially when I'm eating smaller portions. Another reason for drinking more water is the last time I was tested, my liver enzymes came back high. The doctor told me to come back in six months to get retested. Okay, I didn't mean for it to be bold, but for some reason it is and I'm not rewriting it and am not sure how to unbold it.

Yesterday was one of those days where I wanted a milkshake. I had one in the freezer from a few days ago when we went to Arby's and I got a jamocha shake. I got two because my aunt didn't want hers. I had mine leftover in the refrigerator and I had some of it a few days ago but it made my stomach hurt and I remembered the last time I left it in the fridge for a couple of days it made me sick. I decided to throw it away.

I've been testing every day and my fasting sugar has been higher than I like. I had a problem with it a few years ago and after I left the house and got back on the road it went down. I attributed it to stress and this time it could be the same. I'm hoping it is just stress and when I go back on the road with work it will come down. The last time I got the sugar under control and I've had no more issues until now. There is a lot of stress taking care of an elderly person, especially one who's had strokes.

The last time I started eating more protein with my meals in hopes it would come down and it did. I chose plain greek yogurt and more exercise. I was walking but added weightlifting to my routine and it helped. I've started walking twice a day but can't do it every day due to my knee issues. So, I've had to go back to walking only once a day. When I'm on the road I'm more active.

There are a lot of supplements that are touted to help diabetes, whether they do I can't say. I haven't been diagnosed as diabetic but the last time I didn't go to the doctor right away so I never got a baseline a1c reading. By the time I went I had changed my diet, mostly eliminated the stress and my a1c was 5.2%. When I was hospitalized my a1c was 5.3%. I'm hoping my sugar numbers come down and get better. My fasting numbers put me at the diabetic level but throughout the day they may be better. I don't check every day. The fasting numbers need to come down. I know I don't need to be too worried but I'm also proactive. My dad was borderline diabetic but got it under control. My Uncle has battled very bad diabetes for years. He almost lost his feet due to it, has diabetic neuropathy and has had a lot of issues with his eyes. My husband has it as well but I'm most concerned with family history. I also have a family history of heart disease. My mother died from heart disease at 65 and many others in my family had heart attacks and strokes or both like my mother. One of my aunts died from a heart attack at age 54.

There are a number of symptoms with diabetes but some like my husband may not have any. When he first developed it he had no symptoms. We found out about it because one night when I was testing he asked me to test him and when I did we were shocked that his morning/fasting sugar was close to 200. I tested him a few more times and his sugar was consistently high so he went to the doctor and his a1c was 7.5% but the doctor told him he could get it under control but he didn't and he didn't like the medication(metformin) because it caused a lot of gastrointestinal issues but he was also taking cholesterol medicine too. He didn't get it under control and last year he ended up in the hospital with a staph infection after a sore wouldn't  heal. His a1c couldn't even be read. He went back to the doctor a few months ago and it was 12% which is way too high. He's gotten it down a little but is having a big problem with it. His biggest problem is candy and sweet food items. Luckily, I can leave sweets alone.

When his diabetes got real bad he did have symptoms, some of which were excessive thirst and urination, feeling tired and weak(he sleeps a lot), irritability and mood changes, blurry vision and sores that either won't heal or are slow to heal. You may also have cloudy urine when too much sugar builds up. Kidney problems and frequent urinary tract infections are common.

Being inactive and overweight are big contributors to type 2 diabetes. Some people can live for years with it and not know it. Stress doesn't cause diabetes but can make it worse and can make the condition harder to control because the disease itself is a stressor. If left untreated, it can lead to devastating complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, blindness, kidney failure and amputations.

Currently, 29 million people(1 in 10 American adults) have diabetes. By 2050 as many as 1 in 3 could be diabetic. The risk of death is 50% higher than for nondiabetic adults and is a leading cause of death. There are 180 new medications in development.

There are four types of foods that increase your risk of diabetes. They are heavily processed carbohydrates, drinks sweetened with sugar, saturated and trans fats, red meats and processed meats. I know from experience that eating a very high carb meal causes symptoms like nausea and dizziness. This is what motivated me to test after eating a high carb meal every night for dinner and waking up and feeling sick all day. For me this was a baked potato, salsa and tortilla chips. Foods made with white flour, white rice and white sugar such as breads, pasta, cakes and muffins are low in vitamins and minerals and are not good for you especially if you have sugar issues. I do like my muffins on occasion but that's about it. I don't eat rice, potatoes or pasta except occasionally. Eating these foods increase your risk by 21%. Having just two sugar sweetened drinks per day can increase your risk by 26%. I think everyone knows butter, whole milk, cheese and cream is bad for you. Processed meats such as hot dogs, deli meats and bacon are high in nitrates and not only lead to heart disease but put you at increased risk of diabetes. A three ounce serving of red meat daily increases type 2 diabetes risk by 19% and a serving of less than three ounces of processed meats increase the risk by more than 50%. Protein is essential to your health so switch to wild caught fish like salmon, organic poultry and eggs with vegetables to optimize your meal plan. I like tuna and on occasion sardines which are very healthy and also have calcium if you get them with bones. There is research that suggests diet drinks may also increase your sugar.

Prediabetes is very prevalent. One in three Americans is prediabetic. One of my husband's doctors told him that since he wasn't taking insulin(the doctors are now recommending it) he didn't need to test every day. I completely disagree with this advice. She said it is a guide and while I agree with this I believe my rigorous testing and keeping a food journal is what helped me get my numbers down. I was able to see what foods made my sugar higher and what helped combined with exercise.

This book talk about type 1.5 diabetes which I'm not familiar with but goes over every type including prediabetes. Being on the road much of the time with work can make it more difficult to find foods that don't increase the sugar and eating healthier is more difficult however I have two lengthy videos on YouTube that go over what I eat when I'm on the road. Obviously, eating home cooked meals is the healthiest option but when you're on the road this isn't possible but it is possible to eat healthy fruits and vegetables. In fact, it's surprisingly easy for me and cheaper than eating junk food. But it takes time to master the healthiest choices. I eat a lot of raw foods, tuna, salmon, fruit, greek yogurt and whole, natural almonds.

Until next time……..My story……..UPDATE: I'm moving to a marina on Lake Keowee in Oconee County, only in a smaller boat, a 1981 Yukon Delta 28 that needs a ton of work................I’m Rachel Xie Qi Holbert-Jones Page and this is my story: living in Iva, South Carolina (Anderson County), part time in Hartwell, Georgia on my boyfriend's boat, a 1986 Chris-Craft Catalina 381. I was at the Hartwell Marina which doesn’t allow liveaboards so I left. He purchased a 1996 Holiday Mansion 39 Barracuda, 1977 CHB Trawler 34 (I’m remodeling), 1986 Marine Trader 54 Sunliner that I’m updating, 2018 Sunseeker Manhattan 52, 2001 Nordic Tug 37 and a 1983 Fishcraft 28 (similar to the AdventureCraft 28 I lived on and still call home). I’m also camping at various places, mostly lake campgrounds.****************I still care for my aunt in West Virginia sometimes and hoping not to have to return to Memphis, Tennessee. We are scheduled to move my aunt to Dead Women Crossing, Oklahoma but first it’s to Georgia for the winter & Michigan in the summer. I’m still traveling for work and have been to my Uncle’s ranch in Alpine, Texas to oversee it and the cattle he retitled in both of our names, Texas Longhorns, Scottish Highlands, Brangus and show horses. He’s also added Bison and Beefalo to his ranch. **************************** For my work travels my uncle purchased a 1995 Ford E-150 Econoline GT Starquest Campervan. I wasn’t sure about an older van like this but the man that owned it had completely converted it with solar power and electrical, it was a good deal. It only has 112k miles. It only has a sealed portable toilet but it is okay because I prefer a public toilet and only use a camper toilet if I’m dispersed camping, at a Walmart or Cracker Barrel. I prefer rest areas and truck stops. For short trips, I drive a car or SUV. *************************** I have an avid love for photography and capturing the essence of old, abandoned houses, allegedly haunted places, classic, antique vehicles, lakes, rivers, nature, museums, art galleries, antique shops, car shows and historical places. I’m not a ghosthunter or paranormal investigator although I’ve had people request me to lead their groups, I’m a legend hunter. I love scary podcasts and spend more time on YouTube or Audible than Peacock or Tubi. I used to watch TV or movies when I stopped for the night but now I usually go right to sleep when I stop and prefer the podcasts of Darkness Prevails, What Lurks Beneath, Swamp Dweller or Red Owl. I like to listen to scary trucker stories too, occasionally grizzly/polar bear attacks, audiobooks & Dateline Podcasts. I like google scholar, casetext, medium, wordpress, livejournal, blogger, unsplash, pexels, pixabay, pinterest, instagram, facebook, X, tumblr, amazon, eBay, shadowlands (for places that are haunted), reading, greek mythology, animal shows, National Geographic, the metaphysical, food, camping, fitness, weightlifting, nutrition, health, gua sha, face rollers, beauty, fashion, tai chi, yoga, YouTube (listening to van lifers and people living in their vehicles), road tripping, computers, internet and creating videos. I also like long drives & deserted back roads. Work consists of scouting for investment properties and rehabbing/remodeling those properties for my employer. We also remodel old boats and restore classic cars. ******Visit my blogs at https://rachelholbertjonespage.com (Diverse & Wickedly Crazed Diary) that I'm changing to revolve around mostly haunted, abandoned places and occasionally focus on personal posts having to do with my homeless situationhttps://xie-qi.blogspot.com (Rachel X's Secret Diary) focused on my homeless situation; https://sassygrrl32x.blogspot.com is social media type posts in a blog format; https://medium.com/@sassygrrl32a is mostly reviews; https://sassygrrl32.livejournal.com is a social media type blog; https://rachelholbertjones10.blogspot.com has some links to YT videos and personal posts; https://rachelholbertjones.wordpress.com is my business blog and https://youtube.com/sassygrrl32 ……………..By Rachel Xie Qi Holbert-Jones Page AKA sassygrrl32 & Haunted Legendhunter & Bourbon Street Blogger **********************************************Alot of people have asked me the story of my homeless situation and I’ve removed it for now and will discuss it in my blog posts. ***********************************#rachelxieqiholbertjonespage #sassygrrl32 #Iva #Keowee #SouthCarolina #Hartwell #Georgia #andersoncounty #Michigan #livinginacar #vanlife #nomadlifestyle #carcamping #roadtripping #boondocking #carlife #livingoffgrid #vandwelling #vanliving #legendhunter #haunted #abandoned #xieqi #sassyaftersixty #deadwomencrossing #oklahoma #westvirginia #memphis #tennessee #bourbonstreetblogger #bepositive #prayer #GodBless #rebranding #westernzhoudynasty #daxie #nanyang #mandarin #xiemei #lowbow #vitallifeforce #flowingvitalenergy #unseenenergy #taichi #davisislandersllc #rizzoreipartners
